My story begins in San Diego where my parents met during their time in the Navy. I was born soon after and my parents moved in with my grandparents in New York for a short time before moving to the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina where I would spend most of my unremarkably comfortable childhood and teenage years.
Everything changed in college when I accepted an opportunity to study abroad for a year at Gakushuin University in Tokyo. It was a huge challenge for me to go from indoorsy, shy kid to international traveler. It took me out of my comfort zone and it was a great learning experience. it gave me my first identity, “traveler”. After graduating I went back to Japan to work on the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) program for two years in Okinawa and then traveled through 31 countries over two years.
Now I’m back in Japan with a wife and a baby boy on the way. Another adventure is about to start!
